The new fore-deck is built with heavy members that will support components needed aboard. One of Haven Boatworks' carpenters, Hawkins is fitting solid purple-heart halves, making the mast step for the foremast. Sometimes, improvements like centering the mast are possible only because the whole deck is being replaced. On the right, the metal mast step that will be fit into the purple-heart can be seen.
Purple-heart is also used in other areas on the boat. The covering board, found all the way around the deck, and the windlass apron that forms the foundation for the anchor windlass is milled and fitted from large purple-heart beams. Below, see the detail of the teak decking parts like the margin plank, with it's distinctive "Feathered cuts" that hold the thinned ends of the outer deck planks, and the King Planks, in the center of each section.
